Introducing PMI in Vertex Connect™
We're excited to introduce a powerful new capability in Vertex Connect™—support for Product and Manufacturing Information (PMI). This feature is a major step forward in helping teams collaborate more effectively using rich, embedded manufacturing data directly in their 3D models.
What Is PMI?
PMI refers to the specific set of annotations and metadata added to a 3D model to communicate geometric dimensions, tolerances, surface finishes, welding symbols, and other manufacturing instructions.
What Is MBD?
Model-Based Definition (MBD) is a process that embeds all necessary manufacturing information—such as dimensions, tolerances, materials, and annotations—directly into a 3D CAD model. This eliminates the need for separate 2D drawings, creating a single source of truth for product data.
Why PMI Matters
PMI offers multiple benefits across your product development lifecycle:
- ✅ Improved Accuracy: Embedding critical data directly into the model reduces interpretation errors caused by separate 2D drawings.
- ✅ Streamlined Collaboration: Share fully detailed models with internal teams, suppliers, and manufacturers using Vertex Connect’s shared workspaces.
- ✅ Efficiency Gains: Eliminate the overhead of maintaining and syncing 2D drawings with 3D models.
- ✅ Enhanced Digital Thread: Ensure a consistent and traceable flow of information from design through production.
- ✅ Error Reduction: Reduce the risk of miscommunication by consolidating data into a single 3D source.
How It Works in Vertex Connect™
Vertex Connect now enables you to view and share 3D models that contain PMI annotations within your browser—on any device. Here’s how you can leverage this feature:
1. Import CAD Files with PMI
Upload STEP or NX files format that contain PMI, such as STEP AP242 or native CAD files. Support for Creo View, 3DExperience, Catia, Solidworks and QIF will be coming soon.
2. View and Interact with PMI in 3D
PMI annotations—including dimensions, tolerances, symbols, and notes—are displayed directly within the 3D model via the model view tab. No need to flip back and forth between 2D drawings and 3D models.
3. Collaborate in Shared Workspaces
Use secure shared workspaces to collaborate with coworkers, suppliers, or partners. All users can interact with the same annotated 3D model, eliminating confusion and ensuring alignment.
4. Track Revisions with 3D Snapshots
Combine PMI visibility with 3D Snapshots to capture specific views, annotations, and comments tied to model revisions for better design reviews and traceability. (Coming Soon)
5. Merge Multi-Format Models
Use Merge Models to combine assemblies from different formats while preserving PMI data, supporting a full-product view for cross-org collaboration. (Coming Soon)
Get Started Today
You don’t need specialized tools or software—just a browser. Upload your 3D CAD files with embedded PMI, invite collaborators, and start experiencing the benefits of a smarter, more connected product development process.
